She got into SOTA. Here's what art class had to do with it.

When Eliza's mum first brought her to ZenArt, she wasn't thinking about art school. She just wanted somewhere her daughter could draw quietly without being graded.

Eliza was the kind of child who preferred to observe before she joined in. In a class of six, that was fine. She could sit at the edge of a project, watch how the others approached it, and then try her own version when she was ready. Nobody rushed her.

Over two years, something shifted. She started arriving with ideas. She had opinions about which colours she'd use before she even sat down. She began keeping a sketchbook at home — not because we asked her to, but because she wanted somewhere to continue what she started in class.

When she decided to apply to SOTA — the School of the Arts, Singapore — she already had a portfolio. Not one we helped her prepare, but one she'd been building without realising it.

She got in.

Her mum sent us a photo of the acceptance letter. We still have it.

We don't teach to outcomes. We create space for children to find their own relationship with art. Sometimes that leads somewhere formal. Sometimes it just leads to a child who knows how to be patient, focused, and proud of what they make — and that's enough.
